Letter from Daniel Meador to Ronald Sokol, Saturday, December 1, 2001

Christmas, 2001

Dear Family and Friends,

Jan and I send warm greetings to all of you at this our second
Yuletide season in our cottage at Westminster-Canterbury. Although
we have been here for over a year, we feel as though we are still
getting adjusted. The accommodations are spacious and comfortable,
and there are many amenities and services–for which we are very
thankful–but it does not yet feel quite like home.

During this past year we have done a good bit of traveling–to
visit children and relatives, to attend weddings, and to participate in
conferences. One of the highlights was a trip up the Mississippi River
in February on the Mississippi Queen from New Orleans to Vicksburg
and back. Another highlight was a week-long trip in November to
Tuscany with a University of Virginia alumni group. We stayed in a villa
in the country, heard lectures there, and took daytime bus trips to Pisa,
Sienna, Florence, and several medieval villages.

We have been fortunate in having visits from Barrie and Anna and
families at various times during the year. They staged a grand 75th
birthday party for me on Thanksgiving weekend at Dan’s house (in our
new location he is now nine miles from us). I am happy to report that
all of our children, their spouses, and our seven grandchildren are
doing well. The entire crowd gathered at Callaway Gardens in April to
celebrate Jan’s 70th birthday. For Christmas we will be with Anna,
John, and their three children in Dallas.

Jan joins me in wishing you a very fine Christmas and a good
2002. Our guestroom and bath await your visit.
