25 July 1977

Dear Dan,

I was particularly sorry not to have been able to speak to you again
before my departure. I was not able to call again on the July 4th
week-end. I rang the hospital late Tuesday morning and no one answered
at your room number. Wednesday I called again and was told by the floor
nurse that you had already left for Charlottesville. I knew this meant
a favorable doctor’s report, and I was very glad of that. I also knew
that you would be tired from the trip back home to Charlottesville, and I
hesitated to disturb you at home. The next day, Thursday, we left for
France. I hope by now that your sight has begun to return and that you
have regained your strength! I would be most grateful even for a brief
report or some reassurance that this is so. If I can be of any help to
you in any way, I hope you know that I want you to call upon me. As
much as one friend can fervently hope for another’s recovery, you have
my fervent hopes!

With warmest regards, I remain
as ever,

Ronald P. Sokol
