Dear Dan,

Yours of March 29th reached me on April 8th while I was away on a
holiday, and I did not get it until my return on the 14th. Since
then it has been at the top of my list, and yet I see that it has
still taken me a month to reply.

Naturally, we are excited about the possibility of a visit from
you. As you may recall, one of my sons is named after you. He is
aspiring to become eight years old this August, and while he is
aware of your existence, I believe he thinks of you as some
mythological creation of his father’s imagination. When he
learned that you might actually show up, his interest picked up
considerably, but my feeling is that he does not yet fully
believe in you, and that you still hover in his mental sphere in
a mysterious zone which you share with Santa Claus, the tooth
fairy, Zorro, the three musketeers, and other French
personalities with whom you may be less acquainted (Goldorak,
Ixor, etc.)

We shall all be delighted to see you sometime during August 10th
and 14th. We expect our new house to be ready around the first
week in August, so there is some chance that we can receive you
there. If so, you will certainly be the first guests in the new
house and that will give us great pleasure.

Because of the completion of our new house, we shall be in France
all summer. I may take off a week or ten days to go to a table
tennis camp in England with Daniel and my eldest André. While I
do not yet have the dates of that camp, my recollection is that
it ends well before August 10th. So we shall expect you. My home
phone number is 42-92-00-35. My phone number should not change
because of our impending move.

I think there may be non-stop flights from Washington, D.C. to
Paris. You would then fly from Paris to Marseille. The Marseille

airport is only a half hour away. Pan Am has a non-stop flight
from New York to Nice. Nice is a little less than two hours away
by car, and I would be happy to pick you up there. There are
probably also flights from D.C. to London. From London there are
one or two non-stop flights per day to Marseille. You are
probably better off, though, flying either D.C.-Paris-Marseille
or New York-Nice with my meeting you at Nice.

That Alabama should be celebrating Justice Black is a marvelous
and astonishing thing. I would like to go back through the Deep
South and feel for myself just how much things have changed.

Try to give a few days warning as to when you plan to show up.
The more warning the better, but we’ll be happy to see you
whenever you can come.

As ever,

Ron [handwritten signature]
